What to expect
A relationship becomes a plan made by someone else. Bresson's second feature uses a love story to examine revenge, reputation and the unequal power to define another person. The useful tension is between the arrangements made around the couple and the feelings that those arrangements cannot fully dictate. Its literary origins and Cocteau dialogue belong to this early Bresson, rather than a promise that it will look or sound like every later film he made.
How to ease in
Track who knows the plan and who is being kept from it. You can follow the emotional stakes without recognising the literary source. Attend to the difference between a person's public reputation and what another person actually asks of them.
