What to expect

Mário Peixoto’s only feature turns a spare situation into a dense experiment in visual association. Faces, hands, ropes, water, and remembered fragments recur less as plot clues than as emotional pressure, making the film a singular landmark of Brazilian avant-garde cinema.

How to ease in

Do not try to solve every flashback on first viewing. Follow repeated shapes and movements, and let the boat provide the present-tense anchor whenever the editing becomes elusive.

Heads-up

A quick, non-exhaustive note Includes confinement, despair, implied exploitation, death, and extended passages of disorientation. Its silent, non-linear form is deliberately demanding.

At first I could not get hold of the time or place, and I felt as if I had been left behind at sea too. But as I let the images rock me without needing to understand them, that loneliness gradually became strangely comforting. What a peculiar film.
