What to expect

Rebecca Hall’s controlled frames and Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson’s performances preserve ambiguity without draining the story of social danger. The monochrome image makes looking itself unstable.

How to ease in

Stay close to Irene’s perception while keeping its limits in mind. Her observations organise the film, but jealousy and fear complicate what any glance can prove.

Heads-up

A quick, non-exhaustive note Includes racism, racial passing, marital tension, homophobia, death, and psychological distress.
