Original illustration for Cairo Station: Cairo station becomes a layered vertical paper city: sweeping platform roof, a large station clock without tiny numerals, tracks with coherent vanishing point, stacks of folded newspapers and a drinks tray foreground.

What to expect

Chahine makes the station a compressed city of workers, travellers, desire, commerce, union organising, and exclusion. Noir intensity and popular melodrama emerge from the same public space rather than from a sealed criminal underworld.

How to ease in

The station is the organising principle. Identify the newspaper seller, the drinks vendor, and the porter first, then let the crowds show how private longing and public labour continually collide.

Heads-up

A quick, non-exhaustive note Includes sexual obsession, stalking, attempted murder, murder, disability stigma, misogyny, knife violence, and severe distress.

Trains keep offering departure to everyone except the man whose gaze tries to hold the station still. I find the crowds exciting until obsession turns all that movement into a narrowing corridor.
