78 min

What to expect

Carewe’s adaptation and Dolores del Río’s performance made the story a major romantic vehicle at the end of the silent era. Its sympathy remains constrained by the settler melodrama and racial ideas through which Indigenous experience is represented.

How to ease in

Ramona and Alessandro are the centre. The changes of place matter because each promised refuge is exposed to the same unequal system.

Heads-up

A quick, non-exhaustive note Includes anti-Indigenous racism, settler colonialism, child death, murder, forced displacement, grief, and racialised casting conventions.

The landscape is photographed as romance, yet the lovers are repeatedly denied the right to remain anywhere within it. I keep that contradiction beside the beauty.
