Why is the film called The Goddess?

In its essay on the film, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival explains that “goddess” is a euphemism for prostitute. Chinese Film Classics describes the protagonist as a single mother working as a prostitute.

For a first viewing, try holding that historical label beside her care for her son. The distance between society’s judgement and her daily actions offers one way to read the title.

Wu Yonggang builds a social melodrama around Ruan Lingyu’s remarkably controlled performance. Framing, gesture, and urban space expose how exploitation and respectability work together against the central character.
