What to expect

Survivors of a torpedoed ship must organise life in one small boat. Taking a German survivor aboard turns practical questions about steering, leadership and trust into a wartime argument. AFI’s production history also records contemporary disputes over the portrayal of the German character and the Black steward.

How to ease in

Keep track of who has knowledge the others need, especially navigation and medicine, and who gets to make decisions. Sharing the boat does not mean sharing a purpose.

Heads-up

A quick, non-exhaustive note Includes wartime violence, injury and amputation, infant death, suicide, and period racial stereotypes.
