Moreau's character is already dissatisfied before the passing stranger appears, so the new encounter is not simply a contest between a husband and a lover. Malle places the attraction on the boundary between a cultivated bourgeois world and the possibility of leaving it. Approach its sensuality together with that dissatisfaction, rather than as a universal prescription for freedom.
