What to expect

The large-scale chase remains easy to follow because every gag grows from space, machinery, and timing, giving the film the clean satisfaction of an elaborate device in motion.
How to ease in
The Civil War setup is a frame for a remarkably clear chase. Track three things—the locomotive, the railway line, and who currently controls each—and the action will do the rest. Keaton rarely signals a joke with his face, so watch the practical setup around him. The pleasure comes from seeing a small solution become a much larger mechanical problem.

Keaton looks happiest when a machine gives him a problem that can be measured. Wood, water, fire, and distance become comic partners, each perfectly serious about physics.
