What does Fran’s broken mirror reveal? Scene spoilers

At the office Christmas party, Fran lends Baxter her compact to check his new bowler hat. He recognises the cracked mirror he found in his apartment and returned to Sheldrake: Fran is the woman his boss has been bringing there. Her comment about the broken reflection expresses her hurt, while Baxter sees his own face in the same glass. He was admiring the appearance of success; now he sees whom his promotion has involved. Neil Sinyard’s Arrow essay follows this recognition.

The two keys and the final exchange Ending spoilers

Which key does Baxter give back?

Apartment key
He keeps control of his home.
Executive washroom key
He returns the privilege attached to his promotion.

When Sheldrake wants the apartment again to meet Fran, Baxter hands back the executive washroom key and quits. The distinction makes the gesture precise: he gives up his place among the executives so his boss can no longer use his home. The refusal comes before Fran knows about it. Sinyard traces the two keys.

Why does the film end with a card game and “Shut up and deal”?

At the New Year’s Eve party, Sheldrake tells Fran what Baxter has done. She leaves and runs to Baxter’s apartment. The closing game resumes the companionship they shared while she recovered there, as AFI’s synopsis records.

Baxter declares his love; Fran asks him to deal. I hear affection in her invitation to pick up something they have already enjoyed together. She returns, sits beside him, and gets the cards ready. The apartment that other people booked for their affairs becomes a place where these two choose to spend time together, with Fran setting the pace.

Qué esperar

The Apartment carries the timing and wit of Billy Wilder’s comedies into a story shaped by loneliness, workplace power, and moral compromise. Jack Lemmon’s C. C. Baxter lends his apartment to executives conducting affairs, hoping access will accelerate his career. The arrangement becomes intolerable when Shirley MacLaine’s Fran Kubelik is revealed as more than an anonymous visitor. Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond balance sharp dialogue with visual ideas—the vast insurance office, a cracked mirror, a key passed between hands—that make systems of exploitation visible. Its romance works because decency must be chosen before it can be rewarded.

Cómo entrar en la película

The film is funny, but its central crisis is serious and should not be treated as a temporary tonal detour. Watch the movement of keys, mirrors, and office cards; ordinary objects reveal who controls private space. Baxter’s growth is measured less by winning Fran than by refusing the structure that has benefited him.

A tener en cuenta

Una breve nota no exhaustiva A suicide attempt involving sleeping pills and emergency care; workplace sexual exploitation and harassment; infidelity and sex references; smoking, alcohol, and mild violence.

The apartment begins as borrowed space even when Baxter is alone inside it. I like how the film slowly returns ownership through decisions rather than possessions. A key can serve a career, permit harm, or finally close a door; the object changes when the person does.

— Momo

  • Baxter lends his key for career advantage, later cares for Fran after her overdose, and finally refuses Sheldrake another use of the apartment. AFI Catalog
